How much time should I expect to spend studying?
In addition to attending the weekly live class, students should expect to spend approximately 2–4 hours per week studying and completing practice assignments.
What are the admission requirements?
There are no formal prerequisites. See below for information about continuing education credit.
Does completion of the course result in a professional license?
No. The Certificate of Completion confirms that the student demonstrated satisfactory proficiency in the foundations of U.S. and international taxation. The Certificate of Completion is supported by the professional reputations of the course instructors, Larry Stern, CPA, and Yosefa R. Huber, CPA, and their firms, which jointly offer the program: Aboulafia Avital Shrensky & Co and Yosefa R. Huber, CPA (a division of KYC Israel Research Services, Ltd.)
While this course is not specifically designed to prepare students for the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or EA (Enrolled Agent) examinations, past students have reported that it helped them develop many of the concepts and skills they later used when preparing for those exams.
Will the course help me find a job?
We do not guarantee job placement. However, past graduates of our comparable in-person course had excellent rates of job placement and satisfaction in U.S. tax preparation and adjacent fields. We cultivate valuable connections with employers to connect course participants with jobs to launch their careers.
Guest lecturers will expose students to potential career paths and employers. Several past guest lecturers have subsequently hired students they met through the course. The course will include an optional bonus lesson on applying to jobs in Israel. Yosefa and Larry both enjoy mentoring people in the tax profession and look forward to helping guide your next career steps during the course and after completion.
I am an Israeli CPA and would like to learn about U.S. taxes. Is this course appropriate for me?
Yes! Several past students have owned or worked in Israeli tax firms. Any Israeli accountant with strong English skills is likely to encounter clients who have both a U.S. and Israeli tax obligation. While the course covers some basic tax and accounting concepts that should be a review to experienced accountants, the material is a valuable tool to reading U.S. tax forms, coordinating with U.S. tax preparers, and cross-border consulting.
I am already a licensed U.S. CPA or Enrolled Agent. Should I take this course?
Yes! This course is an excellent step for U.S. tax professionals looking to expand their work with an international clientele. Even experienced U.S. tax professionals may have limited exposure to international taxation, tax treaties, international tax documents, and how U.S. taxes compare to the rest of the world. This course will give accountants an understanding of what someone living in Israel or relocating to or from Israel will need to report to the U.S. It will give you the framework to know what questions to ask and where to turn for more information.
Can this course count towards CPA or EA continuing education requirements?
Yes! Study U.S. Tax is an IRS-approved Continuing Education provider! We have also applied for approval from the New York State Board for Public Accountancy to offer continuing education credit for eligible programs within this educational series. If approved, CE/CPE credit will be available only for programs that meet the applicable requirements and not for the entire course. Participants seeking credit will be required to attend the full program, complete any required assessments, and submit a program evaluation.
Some state boards of accountancy permit CPAs to claim CPE credit for educational programs offered by providers that are not NASBA-registered, while others do not. Requirements vary by jurisdiction. Participants should contact their own state board to determine whether these programs qualify for CPE credit in their state. If your enrollment depends on receiving CE or CPE credit, please contact us before registering.
What level of Hebrew is required to comfortably complete the course?
This course will be presented completely in English and no Hebrew reading or prior knowledge is required to complete the course. Some terms will be translated or transliterated to Hebrew for several reasons.
-
Assisting Israeli accountants in connecting concepts they know already with what we are teaching.
-
Familiarizing students with Hebrew terms they will come across in the field.
-
Identifying and understanding basic Israeli tax documents.
-
Preparing students to request documents from future clients or colleagues.
Do I need a professional license to continue my career in this field?
No professional license is required to prepare U.S. federal tax returns for compensation, although registration and other requirements may apply depending on your role and the services you provide. The course will cover ethics and requirements to practice, including the requirement to register for a PTIN, and potential benefits of other certifications.
Can I start my own tax practice after completing this course?
While we can't stop you from opening your own practice with or without the course, preparing taxes as a solo practitioner is not the goal of this curriculum. The course will prepare participants to work in the field of U.S. taxes in Israel. Working under an experienced U.S. CPA or EA is strongly encouraged to gain experience in a wide range of situations we can't cover in this course alone.
What software will students use during the course?
No tax preparation software is required or taught during the course. Students will see examples from at least two different tax preparation applications to illustrate the practical application of the concepts being taught.
Employers consistently report that learning a firm's tax preparation software is relatively straightforward. The greater challenge—and the greater long-term value—lies in developing a strong foundation in U.S. tax concepts.
All practice assignments can be completed using software or materials that most students already have access to. Students may be asked to install free software, including Zoom and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Spreadsheet software (such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or Apple Numbers) may be recommended for certain practice assignments.
What happens if I miss a live class?
We understand that life happens! All lessons will be recorded so that students who miss all or part of a class session can review the recording. Additionally, lessons that would occur during the weeks of Chanukah and Purim will be pre-recorded and self-study lessons that students can complete at their convenience. Because active participation is an important part of the learning experience, students are encouraged to attend live whenever possible.
Can I take the course if I live outside Israel?
Yes! Students from outside Israel are welcome. All classes are conducted live online in English and are recorded for enrolled students. For most of the course, classes meet from 11:15 AM–1:30 PM U.S. Eastern Time.*
If you are a current or aspiring tax professional serving an international clientele, or if you are considering moving to Israel, you will benefit from this course. If you would like to better serve U.S. residents relocating to or from Israel, non-residents investing in U.S. real estate or working in the U.S., and Americans with Israeli accounts or property, we'd love to have you join us.
*Because daylight saving time ends on different dates in Israel and the United States, the October 27, 2026 class will meet from 12:15 PM–2:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
Can I retake an exam if I do not earn 75%?
Students who do not achieve a passing score will have one additional opportunity to demonstrate proficiency through a comparable examination and/or an alternative assessment.
How will I receive the course materials?
Written materials are typically provided as PDFs at least a week before each lesson to give students the opportunity to review or print materials if they wish. No textbooks need to be purchased. Any required reading materials will be provided or made available electronically unless otherwise noted.
All course materials are included in the cost of the course. As a condition of enrollment, students agree not to copy, distribute, or share any written or recorded course materials without prior written permission.
Who owns and runs the course?
Any programs shown on www.studyustax.com are jointly offered by two Israeli companies providing tax, consulting, and related professional services: Yosefa R. Huber, CPA is a division of KYC Israel Research Services, Ltd (Israeli corporation) and Aboulafia Avital Shrensky & Co (Accounting Firm in Israel and PrimeGlobal member.)
This course was developed as a pet project of Yosefa Huber and Larry Stern to fill a need for education in this field. The above-named firms, of which we (Yosefa and Larry) are partners or owners, maintain all rights to the curriculum and course materials. No course materials may be shared or reproduced without written permission.
